Philosophy
What is a cooperative preschool?

A cooperative preschool provides the opportunity for parents to have an active role in both the classroom and the operation of our school. On a rotating basis parents assist experienced professional teachers in their child’s classroom. In addition, each family takes part in the operation of the school by joining a committee to complete a parent job providing services that range from cleaning and maintenance to business administration. Parents also participate in one of three required workdays throughout the year. If parents are not able to participate in the classroom, there are non-co-op options. Parents also have the opportunity to join the school’s Board of Trustees. While our Director oversees the curriculum and day-to-day operations, the Board of Trustees is comprised of volunteer parents who make financial and operational decisions to ensure our ongoing success.
Play-Based Learning

Our programs are based on the belief that children learn best through play. Research has shown that play-based education enhances foundational brain capacities necessary for all future learning. This is strengthened through play, i.e. creativity, sensory experience, movement, imagination, full body action, etc. Also, play allows for child initiated learning, rather than adult-driven directives. This builds brain capacity and instills a value of curiosity and interest in exploration and learning. Kids have the rest of their lives for adult-directed learning, but only have the first five years for the foundational brain capacities to be nurtured. In addition, reading is a part of our play-based curriculum, as is theme-based activities and integrated learning. Play-based curriculum enhances children's social and emotional development, as well as self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. * To this end, children can direct themselves between a variety of stations such as dress-up, housekeeping, manipulative materials and books, and help develop the Pre-K skills mentioned in each class description.
