Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cooperative school?
A cooperative school gives parents the opportunity to participate in their child’s early education. At our school, parents may assist the certified teacher in the classroom, serve on a parent committee, or join the volunteer Board of Directors. Each adult working in our school receives training in classroom procedures and completes a background check, which includes fingerprinting.
What kind of education is available at the Morris Plains Co-op?
Our school’s child-centered curriculum integrates developmentally appropriate activities to encourage cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth. Research has repeatedly shown a link between play and the development of skills, which are prerequisites for more complex learning.
Is the Co-op only for families with a stay-at-home parent?
No, the Co-op offers a variety of classes and additional programs with extended hours from 8:00am to 3:00pm. If neither parent is available to assist in the classroom, the family may choose the non co-op option or the role of teacher assistant may be filled by another adult family member or the child’s caregiver.
What does the Co-op parent do during class?
Our certified teachers plant he educational program Parents work under the teacher’s direction to assist with a learning activity, art project, science experiment, or in the literacy and math centers. In addition, they participate in music, story time, and set up for snack and complete some light classroom cleanup at the end of the session.
How many days does each parent work during the year?
The number of sessions depends on the amount of scheduled class days and the number of children in the class. On average there is one turn every 3-4 weeks.
What if I can’t make it when I am schedule d to help in the class?
Each family chooses the days to work in their child’s class. If a scheduling conflict arises, you may trade your day with another parent in the class.
Are there any other parent responsibilities?
As a non-profit school, we rely on parents to participate in one Work Day on a Saturday morning to help with maintenance projects such as spreading new mulch on the playground. There are several scheduled days throughout the year.
